Lambing has begun!

February 15, 2023 //  by Whitney

Our first lambs arrived arrived on the sunny day of Feb 10 to one of our Dorset ewes named Foghorn (that’s what her Baa sounds like!). A beautiful ram and ewe. The ram lamb was a chunky boy and slow to stand and get going so we had to tube him for the first night. If you haven’t join us over on Instagram yet, do send us a DM there and we’ll include you on the Close Friends feed where you can see videos of some of this! Once lambs spend their first 2 or 3 days in the pen with their mother, getting acquainted with each other’s smells and sounds, they get released back out to the main herd. And now look at this little family!

Then Super Bowl Sunday two more mothers a lambed: Penny’s CVM/Romeldale ewe named Ganache and one of our Romneys, named Ruby. Ganache also had a pair of lambs (Ram and Ewe) but sadly has mastitis which is an infection in her udder. We are treating her with warm compresses during the day and antibiotics. She has improved on one side but the other side of the udder still is not releasing milk so we are supplementing the lambs with bottles. It was a double-header for Penny for hockey on Sunday (a game and a tryout) and it was the Super Bowl so we named her lambs Patty (after Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs) and Huey (after Jack Hughes, hockey play for the NJ Devils).

But it’s not been all about the lambs over here! The weather has been abnormally warm, averaging in the mid-50’s and the sheep are relishing the weather as are we. Our yearling show ewes (Muffin and Barley) were pronking around like lambs on Monday.
