Well, overnight I went out and gave Sugar Cube electrolytes and a little more of his mother’s colostrum via tube feeding. I can get him to stand but he just looks at his mother’s udder with no interest to do much more. And his feces that got on my pants during tube feeding had that sickly smell of bacterial illness.
This morning the good news was that he had not declined any further so again we gave him oral antibiotic and a Vit B shot and another tube feed.
At lunch time Farmer Frank went to see if he could get Sugar Cube to take a bottle and while he did manage that, Sugar Cube then decided to go nurse from his mother after all! He must be feeling better without doubt!
This evening we saw him nursing well on both sides of Sugar’s udder so I think the treatment has definitely saved his life at this point. We will continue with the oral antibiotics and Vit B shots through Friday and reassess then. He’ll get a little more time in the jug than usual but this is the best way to monitor his health and I’m sure Sugar won’t complain about the better hay and plush accomodations!

There is Always Something. . .
